Editing & Export
Editing Workflow
The general editing workflow is:
Preview media (trim)
Rough cut (cut, transitions)
Tighten sequence
Filters / Effects (graphics and titles, keyframe animation, chroma key)
Export
Codecs (h.264, ProRes, XAVC, etc.)
Often times you will just “Match Source”
“Codec” is a word combining “encoder” and “decoder” (or possibly “compressor-decompressor”)
A video codec applies an algorithm that compresses video files into a “container format.”
H.264 is the most widely used codec
Other examples: ProRes, XAVC, etc.
Containers (.MP4, .MOV, etc.)
Often times you will just “Match Source”
The file that contains your video and audio.
It’s common for a container to be called a file extension since they are often seen at the end of file names.
Popular video (visuals only) containers include .mp4, .mov, or .avi, but there are many more.
MP4 will work for just about any platform.
Resolutions (720, 1080, 4K, etc.)
Often times you will just “Match Source”
More pixels = higher resolution
Less pixels = lower resolution
Common resolutions of 720 and 1080 are based on the number of pixels running vertically
2K, 4K, or 8K video are based on the number of pixels running horizontally
720p: HD (1280 x 720 px)
1080p: Full HD (1920 x 1080 px)
2K (2048 x 1080 px)
Quad HD (2560 x 1440 px)
4K: Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 px)
Frame per second
Often times you will just “Match Source”
Cinema/TV = 24 or 30 fps
23.976 = standard 24 fps
29.97 = standard 30 fps
