Choose an App to Study
You can either choose an app from your iPad or your personal phone.

AirDrop Screenshots
Using a personal phone that is not an iPhone? Email your screenshots to yourself and check your email on your iMac, or add to your Google Drive.
On IMac: Turn on AirDrop
On your iMac open Finder
Go to "AirDrop"
Make sure it says "Everyone" (click "No One" to change)
Find iMac Name & Airdrop
Look for the sticker on the bottom right of your iMac that says "AirDrop Name"
If there is no sticker:
From the Launchpad, open System Settings and go to "Bluetooth"
Find "Now discoverable as: _______"
iPad: Look for that name on your iPad's AirDrop and tap to send.
Accept File on iMac
iMac: Click "Accept" on your iMac
Your photo will be saved to your "Downloads" folder in Finder
Create File in Illustrator
On your iMac, open Adobe Illustrator
Create a new "Letter" file.
Save File as .aic
Click "File" > "Save"
Click "Save to Creative Cloud"
Name: "App Study"
Turn on Auto Spell Check
Click "Edit" > "Spelling" > "Auto Spell Check"
Add Screenshots to Illustrator
Open Finder on top of the Illustrator screen.
Open "Downloads" and drag your 2 screenshots onto the Illustrator artboard.
Click into Illustrator to make them show up.
Zoom and Resize
On your keyboard click "command" and "-" to zoom out.
Resize: on your keyboard, hold down "shift" and with your mouse click and drag a corner of your screenshot to resize.
Adjust the sizes of both screenshots so they are the same size.
Move the screenshots onto the artboard so they are only taking up about a third of the page.
On your keyboard click "command" and "+" to zoom in.
Embed Images
Click on your images. Hold down "shift" on your keyboard to select both images at the same time.
Open the "Properties" tab in the top right
Under "Quick Actions" click "Embed"
Lock and New Layer
In the top left, open the "Layers" panel
Click the empty square next to "Layer 1" to lock the layer
Click the "+" icon in the bottom right to create a new layer.
Create Text Boxes
Either click the "T" on the toolbar on the left or tap "T" on your keyboard to start using the Type tool.
Click on your artboard to create a new text box.
Create a new textbox for each principle of design and space them out around the page.
Repetition
Alignment/Margins
Balance
Emphasis
Contrast
Rule of Thirds
Hierarchy/Movement

Un-Hyphenate
Select all your text boxes (either hold "shift" and click all of them, or click and drag to encompass all the text boxes and let go)
In the "Properties" panel under "Paragraph" click the "..."
Un-check the "Hyphenate" checkbox.
Repetition
Click on the "Repetition" text box.
Zoom in: on your keyboard click "command" and "+"
Double-click the white circle attached to the text box so that it becomes filled in.
Adjust the text box to accommodate more text.
Double-click on the "Repetition" text box to add text to it.
List 3 things that repeat. Look for patterns in the elements of art
Are there repeated colors? Repeated shapes/forms? Repeated lines? Repeated fonts (aka: shapes/lines)?
Annotate with the Paintbrush
Choose a color that is not used much in your app
Double-click the color swatch for the stroke (outline)
In the Color Picker, choose a color and click "OK"
Click the Paintbrush Tool in the toolbar.
On your keyboard click "[" to decrease the size of the Paintbrush Tool (or "]" to increase the size)
Use the Paintbrush Tool to draw arrows and circle the elements you are talking about.
Repeat for each Principle of Design
Continue explaining 3 things for each principle of design.
Continue annotating each thing with your Paintbrush Tool for each principle of design. Choose a different color for your Paintbrush Tool for each principle of design.
For the "Rule of Thirds" draw a rule of thirds grid over both screens. (hold "shift" to create straight lines") and explain what is on the intersections.
Save Illustrator File as a PDF
Click "File" > "Save As..."
Click "Save on your computer"
Choose "Creative Cloud Files" on the left list.
Change to "Adobe PDF (pdf)"
Click "Save"
Click "Save PDF"
Submit PDF to Canvas
Upload PDF to Canvas
