Go to the News Stories folder: "Google Drive" > "Shared drives" > "Media Design & Production" > "Script Writing - News Stories"
Choose 1 teammate's iMac for your team meeting:
Team A (Natalie, Camden, AJ)
Team B (Bella, Kris, Nino)
Team C (Nunu, Victor, Star)
Team D (Jackson, Nuutai, Evan)
Review each story and talk through:
Is it hard news (urgent, factual) or soft news (emotional, human interest)?
What’s the headline?
Who’s involved?
Why does it matter?
As a team, choose 6 stories.
Each person needs to choose 1 hard news story and 1 soft news story.
Open the shared team Google Doc and write down who is doing which story.
Back at your own iMac, open the shared team Google Doc.
For each of your chosen 2 stories, write:
Lead sentence (what’s the news?)
Details (1–2 sentences max)
Quote or soundbite (optional, short)
Wrap-up or transition to next story
Make sure your segment is 40-50 words.
Example: “The school cafeteria will debut new plant-based options next week. Staff say it’s part of a push for healthier meals. Student Taylor Green says, ‘It’s about time we had more variety!’ The full menu will be posted Friday.”
Choose 1 teammate's iMac for your team meeting:
Open the shared script document.
Complete the following steps as a team:
Adjust your story order so it flows from the most important/urgent hard news first and ends with the most fun/lighter stories.
Figure out which story is the best in-between story that can be your transition from hard stories to soft stories.
Label each story with either Anchor #1 or Anchor #2 (switch back and forth)
Write a brief welcome and tease 1–2 top stories at the start of the script.
Examples:
"Anchor 1: My name’s Anchor 1 and joining me here today is my Co-Host Anchor 2. Welcome Anchor 2.
Anchor 2: Thank you for having me, Anchor 1. Coming up—new changes in school lunch menus, a record-breaking season for the track team, and what students are binge-watching right now.”
At the start of each story add simple signposts to keep it smooth:
“In other news...”
“Meanwhile on the field…”
“Switching gears to entertainment…”
"Yes, and..."
Vary your tone: serious for hard news, relaxed for soft news.
Write a brief sign-off.
Example: “For now, I’m Jordan. And I'm Alex. Thanks for watching.”
Highlight your script and go to "Tools" > "Word count"
Check your word count next to "Words"
Check the box "Display word count while typing" and click "OK"
Edit your script until you are between 350-370 words.
As a group practice saying the script out loud and use your iPad's timer to make sure you are around 3 minutes.
