Review Principles of Design Examples
Repetition
What elements of art are repeated?
The shape of the text/letters is repeated. They are blocky and imperfect.
The color of the text/letters is repeated on each jar. For example, the Rich Hazelnut jar uses green for the text and green on the top sticker band.
The lines on either side of the "Flavour Infused Instant Coffe" are repeated. They are thin and vertical.
Alignment/Margins
How are different elements aligned? What is inside the margins vs. outside?
The text (shapes) is center aligned on the jar.
The shapes of the circle cutouts and triangle cutouts on the left panel are aligned with each other in the center
The text is all within the margins, while the images are bleeding outside the margins and onto the next sections.
Balance
Is there approx. formal/symmetrical balance or informal/asymmetrical balance? How?
This design uses informal/asymmetrical balance because split in half vertically or horizontally the sides are different. However, the sides are still balanced. For example, the smaller text "Contains exclusively natural ingredients" is farther on the left than the larger "organic sugar free mango jam"
This design uses approx. formal/symmetrical balance because when split in half vertically, each side is approximately the same. This is achieved by centering all the text and the logo as well as the triangle cutout shape and textures in the background.
Emphasis/Hierarchy
What is the focal point and how did the designer make it stand out? What do you look at next, next, next and why (hierarchy)?
The focal point of this design is the "Plum Chutney" text. The designer made it stand out by making it the largest text (size contrast) and creating a high color contrast between it (white) and the dark background.
The next largest text is the "For Cheese" and then "Sweet and Intense" - this hierarchy is created using both contrast in color and size, as well as line/shape thickness of the text.
Contrast
What elements of art differ? Is it high or low contrast?
The shape of the text is contrasted. "Rise & Shine Beautiful" is thicker than the "Hand Crafted" thin-shaped text. This is high contrast.
The color (black) and value (dark) of the text is contrasted with the background's color (white) and value (light). This is high contrast.
Rule of Thirds
What is placed on the rule of thirds intersection(s)? Why?
This design has placed their title on the top-right rule of thirds intersection. Additionally, the lemon is placed on both the top-left and bottom-left rule of thirds intersections. These two items are both the most important parts of the design to look at first.
Find Your Own Examples
Search online for packaging design examples that you like. The examples above use just jar packaging design, however, you can find box packaging design, bag packaging design, or anything you can think of!

Create a Google Slides Presentation
Create 6 slides. One for each of the following principles:
Repetition
Alignment
Balance
Emphasis/Hierarchy
Contrast
Rule of Thirds
Add a photo from the previous step to each slide.
Add a reflection to each Slide
For the respective slide, answer the following questions (written out as text on each slide):
Repetition: What elements of art repeat? How?
Alignment/Margins: How are different elements aligned? What is inside the margins vs. outside?
Balance: Is there approx. formal/symmetrical balance or informal/asymmetrical balance? How?
Emphasis/Hierarchy: What is the focal point and how did the designer make it stand out? What do you look at next, next, next, and why (hierarchy)?
Contrast: What elements of art differ? Is it high or low contrast?
Rule of Thirds: What is placed on the rule of thirds intersection(s)? Why?
