Essential Sound Practice
Headphones
Connect headphones (either your own or borrow a classroom pair)
Open a Premiere Pro Project
Open a Premiere Pro project with synced double-system audio. (a camera/audio clip + a separate audio clip)
Make sure your scratch track (the audio recorded directly on camera) is muted (click the M on the track).
Download Music and Sound Effects
Go to: https://pixabay.com/music/
Choose a music clip to download
Choose a sound effect to download
Move Downloads to Creative Cloud Files
Move your downloaded audio files to your "Creative Cloud Files" in Finder
Import & Add Tracks
With Premiere Pro open, drag your downloaded audio files into your timeline.
Right-click on the empty space next to your audio tracks and click "Add Tracks..."
In the "Add Tracks" pop-up, click "OK"
Move your audio files to their own tracks.
Trim Music
Trim your music clips so that is starts a few seconds before your dialogue and ends a few seconds after your dialogue.
Zoom In Vertically
Click and drag the circle on the right side of your audio timeline to zoom in on your audio until you see the level line on your audio tracks.
Essential Sound Tab
In the right side panel, open "Essential Sound"
Tag Audio
When you select an audio clip and open Essential Sound for the first time, you should see an option to tag your audio clip.
Select the tag that best suits each of your audio clips:
Dialogue
Music
SFX (sound effects)
Ambience
Edit Dialogue
Once you have tagged an audio clip as dialogue, you should now see new editing options.
Loudness: Click "Auto-Match" (you can also have multiple dialogue tracks selected at once when you do this)
Edit Music
Once you have tagged an audio clip as music, you should now see new editing options.
Loudness: Click "Auto-Match" (you can also have multiple music tracks selected at once when you do this)
Ducking: Check the box to turn it on, make sure it has the dialogue icon in blue, then click "Generate Keyframes" to duck your music against your dialogue
Edit Sound Effects
Once you have tagged an audio clip as a sound effect, you should now see new editing options.
Loudness: Click "Auto-Match" (you can also have multiple music tracks selected at once when you do this)
Take a Screenshot of Your Editing Timeline
On your keyboard press "cmd" + "shift" + "4"
Use the screenshot crosshairs to click and drag from the top left of the editing timeline to the bottom right.
